Project Number 1

Summary:

Part of a joint venture between EPA, TURI and RI DEM to reduce the use of TCE in the Providence, RI area, one trial was conducted on this client’s oil. All six products, Brulin Corporation Aquavantage 1400, International Products Corp Surface Cleanse 930, Warren Chemical Company Sea Wash Blue, Oakite Products Inproclean 3800, US Polychem Corporation Polyspray Jet 790 XS, Magnaflux Daraclean 283, were found to work on the supplied quench oil. Cleaning with ultrasonic energy will increase the effectiveness of the products especially when dealing with intricate parts. Having found products successful on the quench oil, the next step will be to evaluate these cleaners on supplied parts.

Test Objective:

Replace TCE for removing oil from steel, stainless steel and brass parts.

Product Use:

Small parts for braiding machines, flash light bulb holders
Trial Number Date Run Purpose Success Rating
0 09/11/2006 To evaluate selected cleaners for removing quench oil from steel parts using immersion cleaning. Results successful using TACT (time, agitation, concentration, and temperature, as well as rinsing and drying) and/or other cleaning chemistries examined.
1 11/06/2006 To evaluate an additional product for oil removal using immersion cleaning on oil. A follow up test, usually based on company input.
2 11/29/2006 To evaluate selected product on supplied parts. Results suggest a scale-up feasible match for cleaning chemistry and equipment. Pilot plant study with actual parts recommended.
