Trial Number 5

Trial Purpose:

To evaluate selected products for ink removal from supplied parts using manual wiping.

Date Run:

01/20/2009

Experiment Procedure:

Five products from the previous trial were selected based on ink removal. Each product was used at full strength and room temperature. A Kimberly Clark reinforced Wypall X60 reinforced wiper was soaked with a cleaning product and then used to wipe ink off of a section on ink coated galvanized steel cable housing. Cleaning was stopped after 5 minutes and observations were made.

During the course of the experiment, a sixth product was included based on vendor recommendation for ink removal.

Trial Results:

Cleaner Observations Rank
DBE 6 Required more than 5 minutes 5
  Little ink removal
Shopmaster RC Required more than 5 minutes 5
  Little ink removal
SC Soyester Required more than 5 minutes 4
Part of wire cleaned - fair
  ink removal
Graffiti Remover SAC Required more than 5 minutes 2
  Removed most of the ink
Smart Solve 605 Required more than 5 minutes 3
  Most ink removed

Vandal Mark Remover Less than 5 minutes 1
Removed ink in under 2 minutes

Success Rating:

Results successful using TACT (time, agitation, concentration, and temperature, as well as rinsing and drying) and/or other cleaning chemistries examined.

Conclusion:

Of the five previously tested products, Graffiti Remover SAC and Smart Solve 605 worked the best. The added sixth product however worked better than both of these products. The one concern with the Vandal Mark Remover is that it may not be the safest product to use. A further review of EH&S materials will be conducted.
