Project Number 1

Summary:

Semi-aqueous products were successful in removing paint from the brass parts, but have not yielded a bright finish. Baking soda media blasting removed the paint and resulted in a dull finish. Acidic aqueous parts have been evaluated for brightening.

Test Objective:

Cleaning Hardware to a bright finish

Product Use:

window and door hardware
Trial Number Date Run Purpose Success Rating
0 08/14/2001 To identify potential cleaning formulations for cleaning brass parts Results successful using TACT (time, agitation, concentration, and temperature, as well as rinsing and drying) and/or other cleaning chemistries examined.
1 08/14/2001 Further evaluation of most successful products from first trial A follow up test, usually based on company input.
2 08/17/2001 Evaluation of additional cleaners Results successful using TACT (time, agitation, concentration, and temperature, as well as rinsing and drying) and/or other cleaning chemistries examined.
3 08/22/2001 To evaluate high pressure spray wash for paint removal Results successful using TACT (time, agitation, concentration, and temperature, as well as rinsing and drying) and/or other cleaning chemistries examined.
4 09/06/2001 To evaluate media blasting for paint removal Results suggest a scale-up feasible match for cleaning chemistry and equipment. Pilot plant study with actual parts recommended.
5 09/13/2001 To identify products that will brighten the brass parts after removing the paint. Results successful using TACT (time, agitation, concentration, and temperature, as well as rinsing and drying) and/or other cleaning chemistries examined.
6 10/17/2001 Second attempt to identify products that will brighten the brass parts after removing the paint. Results successful using TACT (time, agitation, concentration, and temperature, as well as rinsing and drying) and/or other cleaning chemistries examined.
7 10/19/2001 Third attempt to identify products that will brighten the brass parts after removing the paint. Results successful using TACT (time, agitation, concentration, and temperature, as well as rinsing and drying) and/or other cleaning chemistries examined.
8 11/19/2001 Evaluation of additional cleaners for brass brightening Results successful using TACT (time, agitation, concentration, and temperature, as well as rinsing and drying) and/or other cleaning chemistries examined.
