Trial Number 0

Trial Purpose:

To conduct a longevity test of fragrance and softness from products used in-wash or as dryer sheets on white cotton towels.

Date Run:

12/01/2019

Experiment Procedure:

Three separate sets of towels were conditioned using the product as directed. The initial ratings were taken before washing the towels with the product. The towels were dried, folded, and stored in a drawer designated for each product tested. The towels were kept in the drawers for up to 84 days with a specific time point designated for rating fragrance and softness. At each time point, a panel of three rated the towels on fragrance strength using the following rating scores:

Smell Rating
0 no fragrance/small amount
1 little fragrance
2 some fragrance
3 strong fragrance

For the dryer sheets, the towels were folded and stored like the in-wash product testing, but the initial average rating for softness was taken before drying the wet towels. The towels were rated on softness after a span of 70 days.

Softness Rating
0 rough
1 a little soft
2 somewhat soft
3 super soft

Conclusion:

Downey Stoppables was shown to be the most effective to hold its fragrance on average over a period of 84 days after using the in-wash product on white cotton towels. Clorox Lavender had the most noticeable fragrance out of the three Clorox products that kept a consistent odor rating over the span of time. Clorox Brazillian and Clorox Coconut in-wash products initially had a lower average odor rating compared to the other products after using and by the end of the 84 days. Clorox Coconut kept consistent throughout most of the test and only had very little fragrance by the end.

All three Clorox dryer sheet products were relatively consistent over 70 days after drying with the product and were considered only a little soft on average. Clorox Scentiva Fresh Brazilian Blossoms towels were the least effective in softness ratings.
