Trial Number 0

Trial Purpose:

Conduct on-site assessment of current ineffective aqueous cleaning process.

Date Run:

01/13/2009

Experiment Procedure:

The whole operation was not reviewed. The focus of the visit was on the pallets where they have small parts put into the holes. The company is applying carbon black to the parts or the pallets at some point and the carbon gets all over the pallet.

The company has a dishwasher and have recently bought a parts cleaner with brush and scrubbing attachments to see if this helps remove the carbon black. They are currently using Amberclean Q3. The Process Engineer said the product is not doing what they need. They are using it in 5% solution, 0.5 gallons to 10 gallons.

Trial Results:

Three pallets and a bag of carbon black were collected to use in the lab. The goal is not so much visual cleanliness but wipe cleanliness. They would like to see the pallets cleaned so that no carbon black was coming off when the pallets are wiped. Right now, when you touch the carbon black comes right off on everything.

The contact person said they can look dirty as long as they wipe generally clean. The lab plans to evaluate alternatives using G-10 plastic coupons because they are easy to put the carbon black on.

Success Rating:

Technology Transfer.

Conclusion:

The lab will look at immersion and spray options for this client.
