Trial Number 4

Trial Purpose:

To evaluate the effectiveness for the removal of dirt soil from carpet using manual wipe.

Date Run:

03/16/2021

Experiment Procedure:

Three carpet coupons were used to test each of the two cleaners. Initial color spectrometer L-values were taken. Each coupon was covered in 1 gram of dirt using a rolled plastic bottle in a towel. Soil was allowed to air dry for 24 hours before dirty color spectrometer L-values were recorded. Three coupons of the same product were loaded into the Straight-Line Washability (SLW) machine and a KC Wypall reinforced paper towel was attached to the cleaning sled. The Wypall and coupons were treated with 2 sprays of the cleaner and run for 20 cycles (equivalent to 30 seconds of cleaning). Coupons were left to air dry for 24 hours and final color spectrometer L-values were recorded the following day. Initial, dirty, and clean visuals were also used. 3 participants from TURI labs rated each coupon. The pH was recorded after cleaning.

Cleaners Used:

A. PathoSans All Purpose

B. Zep High Traffic Carpet Cleaner

Trial Results:

The L-values and visual ratings show that both products do not remove the soil from the carpet squares very well. The lowest rated coupon was coupon number 4 for product B (Zep High traffic carpet cleaner). Results may be worse than an actual practice comparison because SLW unit does not apply pressure to the same degree as an everyday individual. The pH was 10.

Success Rating:

Preliminary compatibility tests on substrate coupons encouraging for at least one cleaning chemistry. More in-depth laboratory testing necessary.

Conclusion:

Both products did not meet the standard visual removal rating. Therefore, we cannot assume these cleaners are efficient for the removal of carpet stains.
